Jindal Films makes specialty plastic films for the food and packaging industry. Their plant in Virton, in the province of Luxembourg (Wallonia), operates 24/7, with a particularly energy)intensive manufacturing process, all year long.
After an international competitive tender, Enerdeal by EDP was selected to design, build, finance and operate an on-site solar power plant for the site. The agreement runs for 25 years. All solar electricity produced is consumed directly on-site.
Project at a glance
Capacity: ~7 MWc
Installation type: Ground-mounted + Rooftop
Energy model: 100% self-consumption
Contract type: 25-year Power Purchase Agreement
Location: Virton, Wallonia, Belgium
Client: Jindal Films (Jindal Group, India)
The role of regulation
Wallonia's environmental regulations impose CO₂ reduction targets on industrial sites. At the same time, grid electricity prices have made long-term energy cost control a real business priority for manufacturers. A site like Virton, energy-intensive, operating around the clock, is exactly where on-site solar makes most sense.
Under the PPA, Enerdeal finances and owns the installation. Jindal pays for the electricity it consumes, at a rate well below the standard grid tariff, for the duration of the contract. No upfront investment required.
Two global companies, one long-term partnership
Jindal Group is headquartered in India, with manufacturing operations across Europe. EDP, Enerdeal parent company, operates across in more than 20 countries.
A 25-year energy contract requires a sound financial and operational track record. Such decisive criteria reflect key reasons for such a solid partnership.
