Enerdeal, a subsidiary of EDP Group, a European leader in distributed solar generation, will install and operate solar panels under a long-term contract with Industeel, ArcelorMittal's specialized division in the production of specialty steels in thick plates
Enerdeal, a provider of solar energy solutions for companies operating in Belgium, Luxembourg and France, integrated into the EDP Group since 2023 (European leader in the production of green energy), has signed a long-term contract with Industeel Belgium, an ArcelorMittal entity specialising in the manufacture of thick plates made of special steels for the energy sector, and industry in general.
As part of this agreement, Enerdeal will finance, install and operate a 5.2 MWp rooftop solar photovoltaic power plant at Industeel's industrial site in Charleroi. This facility will allow Industeel to directly consume 100% of the electricity produced, contributing to its ambitious goals of reducing carbon intensity by 35% by 2030 (compared to 2018) and achieving net-zero by 2050.
Thanks to this initiative, more than 1,000 tonnes of indirect CO₂ will be avoided each year, equivalent to the energy consumption of 1,250 households, while strengthening the site's energy autonomy and resilience to fluctuations in the energy market.
Certified ResponsibleSteel since 2023, Industeel Belgium is asserting itself as a key player in the circular economy by producing steels with a low carbon footprint through the recycling of scrap metal and the use of electric furnaces. The integration of locally produced renewable energy reinforces this sustainable approach and consolidates the position of the Charleroi site as a showcase for the XCarb® Recycled & Renewably Produced approach led by the ArcelorMittal group.
Enerdeal will fully finance the project and will provide operation and maintenance for the duration of the contract, on an as-a-service basis. This allows Industeel to benefit from competitive renewable energy without initial investment or additional operational burden.
This agreement strengthens Enerdeal's position as a trusted partner for large corporate customers with significant energy needs, helping them power their operations sustainably while maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficiency. It also highlights EDP's ability to provide clean energy solutions across Europe, supporting the decarbonisation of key value chains.
Grégoire de Pierpont, CEO Enerdeal: "This 20-year partnership between two leading global groups - through Enerdeal (EDP) and Industeel Belgium - ArcelorMittal, demonstrates a strong mutual trust both technically and contractually. EDP is proud to be able to collaborate alongside ArcelorMittal in this project, which could generate other similar initiatives globally, given our respective geographical coverage and international ambitions."
Nicolas Vassart, COO Industeel Belgium: "This new photovoltaic panel installation project confirms Industeel's commitment to decarbonising its industrial process by using renewable energy produced at its Charleroi site. At the end of the tender process, Enerdeal emerged as the most suitable partner for this project due to its professionalism and competitiveness. »
Stéphanie Corre, CSO Industeel: " This initiative isa concrete illustration of our decarbonization roadmap to Net Zero by 2050 and our desire to offer low-emission steel solutions for our customers today. Powered by local green energy, it reinforces our XCarb® approach and our role as a major player in the circular economy. »
By producing a significant amount of renewable energy and avoiding significant CO₂ emissions every year, this project illustrates Industeel Belgium's commitment to environmental leadership in the Belgian steel industry
EDP has installed more than 3 GWp of industrial solar energy worldwide and is continuing its development in Belgium, Luxembourg and France, with recognized expertise in transforming complex sites into sustainable energy production hubs.
